Work Permits and LMIA in Canada

Work permit immigration services in Canada

A work permit lets you live and earn a living in Canada, often while a longer application such as permanent residence is being decided. What people often underestimate is how strict the dates are. If your status lapses, even by a few days, it can take months to restore and in some cases it cannot be restored at all.

You work directly with an immigration lawyer who identifies the right permit, prepares the application and tracks your expiry dates, so your next application is filed on time.

Work permits we handle

If you are not sure which permit fits your situation, start with a consultation.

  • Work permits based on a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), with support for employers through the LMIA application and compliance

  • Changes of employer when your permit is tied to one company

Open work permits

  • Spousal and common law partner open work permits (SOWP)
  • Post graduation work permits (PGWP), including eligibility problems and refusals
  • Bridging open work permits (BOWP) while your permanent residence application is processed
  • Open work permits for vulnerable workers
  • International Experience Canada (IEC), including the Working Holiday program

Keeping your status

  • Work permit extensions, changes of conditions and restoration of status
  • Advice on maintained status (formerly called implied status) and your right to keep working while an extension is processed

What the process involves

01

Identifying the right permit: one based on an LMIA, one that is LMIA exempt or an open work permit.

02

For an LMIA, the employer advertises the position, documents its recruitment efforts and applies to Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC).

03

For an LMIA exempt permit, the employer submits the job offer through the IRCC Employer Portal and pays the employer compliance fee.

04

Preparing your application with proof of your qualifications, work experience and any other evidence the permit requires.

05

Checking the conditions printed on the issued permit and tracking its expiry date, so an extension can be filed before it runs out.

Common problems we solve

  • A permit expiring before a new application is decided
  • An employer who is unsure what the LMIA or Employer Portal requires
  • A refusal because the officer was not satisfied you would leave Canada at the end of your stay
  • Losing your job while your permit is tied to that employer
  • Errors on an issued permit, such as the wrong employer, occupation or expiry date
  • Learning that past work in Canada was not authorized
