Meet the founder
April A. Nutakor is an immigration lawyer and a member of the Law Society of Ontario. She works with individuals, families and employers across Canada and worldwide.
When immigration officers review your file, they don’t see the person behind the paperwork. They only see what is on the page. My mission is to support you throughout your immigration journey and build the strongest possible application so nothing is left to chance.
Her story
From Crimea to Canada
April has lived on three continents and each one left its mark on her. She loves all three and she still travels whenever she can to discover new places.
Where she grew up
April was born in Crimea on the Black Sea and lived there for 15 years. It is a place of mountains, sea and many cultures living side by side. She speaks Russian fluently, so Russian speaking clients, wherever they come from, can work with her in their own language.
Where she found her calling
Ghana became her second home for more than a decade. It is a country where akwaaba (welcome) is often the first word a newcomer hears and she loved the country's warmth and rich, vibrant culture. She studied at the University of Ghana School of Law, where she won a merit scholarship and was one of eight students chosen for a Harvard Law School clinic on girls' right to education. She then graduated first in her class as valedictorian, with First Class Honours and the best grades the school had seen since 2012.
From McGill to her own practice
In Canada, she earned a Master of Laws degree at McGill University in Montreal. She became a lawyer and went on to lead the Common Law Department at a Montreal firm of more than 50 employees. She appeared in more than 300 hearings across Canada, took cases to trial and negotiated over 250 successful settlements. Today she runs her own practice in Ottawa, helping people with permanent residence, work and study permits, family sponsorship, citizenship and Federal Court challenges.
In her own words
A letter from April
I have spent my life moving across three continents.
Each move meant starting over: a new language, a new school, new rules to learn and new people to meet. I remember how unsettling that can be and how much courage it takes before a new place starts to feel like home.
I have always been motivated by how the little things we do can affect the bigger picture. Something that seems insignificant in the moment, like standing up for someone whose rights are being ignored, can be the beginning of something much bigger. It is why I have always volunteered: with international students and rural communities in Ghana, on a sustainable tourism project in Rwanda and with Indigenous communities in Canada.
It is also why I chose immigration law. Moving to a new country is one of the biggest steps a person can take. It is hard and at times exhausting, but I truly believe it can become one of the most beautiful parts of life. It has been in mine.
In an immigration file, the little things matter too. One missing document or one detail left unexplained can cost months of delay and those are months away from the life you are building. I want to give you the best chance possible, so your plans are not held back by a mistake that could have been avoided.
Most of all, I want you to feel confident about your application and about what comes next. It gives me great pride when, because of our work together, you start your new life bolder and more sure of yourself.
If you are about to start your own journey, or you are already on your way, I would be glad to help you take the next step.
Warm regards,
April A. Nutakor
